I wasn’t familiar with Alex’s work, but his strong sense of light and dark came across powerfully in the moody images advertising his commissions here on CAF.

Being a fan of high contrast, I arranged a commission through Nicholas Bittencourt at Chiaroscuro Studios. As a rep, he was super easy to work with and very responsive, which I think we all appreciate.

I left choice of scene up to Alex and his initial layout had Cap holding his broken shield in Endgame. It was a great composition but, other than the broken shield, wasn’t instantly recognizable. After a little back and forth with Nicholas, we settled on Cap’s iconic entrance from Infinity War as the scene and, ultimately, this as the layout.

The end result is everything I envisioned. He nailed the interplay of positive and negative space as Cap steps out from the shadows. And maybe it’s just me, but does his signature block feel Toth-ian to anyone else? Love that.

The mood is achieved quite successfully with the shadows tying Rogers with the dark background and lighting behind him.

I really need to stop looking at your CAF updates because it makes me want something from Alex Shibao now.
