DescriptionJoe Sinnott is one of the best inkers over Colan, and I'm pleased to finally have an example. Thanks to Joe's skill and fidelity to the pencils, we can appreciate the full character of Gene's distinctive underworld types, as well as the unique drawing decisions he makes with shadows and anatomy, like that slinky white highlight up Suprema's arm in panel 2.For those interested in the Marvel Method of writing comics, there's a small, but I think typical, example here of Stan's influence on the story. Most of Gene's plot notes are cut off by the close trim of the board, but you can make out on the last panel, Gene has Wilde saying "Now get out!" and making a matching gesture with his thumb. But Stan changes the line to "Take 'em, boys!"--presumably to amp up the excitement. The gesture doesn't fit quite as well with the new line, and, imho, it flattens Gene's characterization of the confident club owner. Social/Sharing |

Fabulous mugs and trash talk (both Colan's and Lee's) in this classic page! The inks are amazing

It comes off like a black and white teleplay from the golden age of television with how Colan stages each panel. Nothing specatcular about the backgrounds, but the closeups and the atmopshere are top notch to carry this story.

I wouldn't mess with Slinky. Great page, Aaron. Thanks for the Stan meddling marginalia.

Joe really made Gene shine while retaining Gene's style without over powering him or redrawing. This gem stands alone and has no need for colors. A great ink wash candidate!
