DescriptionM.A.N.T.I.S. by Ken LashleyOkay this was a sketch I did not expect I would be able to get. But holy cow am I so glad it worked out that I could. Every time I have had an interaction wit Ken Lashley it has been great he is such a joy to follow on social media with the amazing art and positivity he puts out there. I am so glad I got to speak with him for only a few moments. During the sketch segment at Comic Art Fans Original Art Expo I asked if I could get a sketch, requesting either M.A.N.T.I.S. or Isiah Bradley Captain America and Ken without hesitation and laughing said , that’s the same guy, in the moment I had forgotten both characters were played by the amazing Carl Lumbly. M.A.N.T.I.S. was a show I loved growing up, the story of Miles Hawkins, who after being paralyzed during a riot creates an exoskeleton to regain his ability to walk and ends up becoming the defender of Port Colombia. The initial TV movie and subsequent series have some distinct differences, but I love them both. For the longest time I believed that the M.A.N.T.I.S concept has a lot of fertile ground to explore and expand upon, with some sort of reboot or relaunch in either live action or comics. I was thrilled when I Ken was drawing this piece more then one fan reacted by yelling a variation of “oh my gosh M.A.N.T.I.S.!!!” I really hope the right company and creators will find a way for bring the character back. Lashley definitely deserves props for being able to draw this on the fly. It was a great early step in African American superheroes in the 90's along with Meteor Man and Blank Man before passing the baton to Spawn, Steel, and Blade to run the next leg.
