Description

Familiar story: I used to own this page and then traded it for another, more expensive page. I regretted that decision at the time, but in this hobby (in my house, anyway) Peter sometimes has to rob Paul.

When the opportunity to re-purchase the page arose, I had to find a way to make it work. In the process I had to give up other pages I’d rather not have given up, but so it goes. Again: an old story.

Here we have the first glimpse (sort of/kind of/almost/not really) of Him. Each of these four panels screams Kirby to me. I’ll leave it at that except to say . . .

Stan Lee was merciless in his marginal notes about Jack’s work in this issue. On this page and at least on two others (assist from Justin Karlson: thank you!), Lee questioned Alicia’s height or advised Joe Sinnott to adjust Jack’s proportions regarding the size of her body relative to the size of her head. You can read Lee’s comment in the lower right and see the resulting change in Sinnott’s use of white out in panel four. Damned cheeky of Stan, I’d say.

In any event, I am more than excited to have this page back in my collection even though, in the end, we are merely temporary stewards of these lovely pieces of paper. After all, we are ourselves temporary. Double thanks to Bechara for both the first and second shots. Thanks also to the fabulous Tom Kraft for the stitched scan.

The last hurrah for Stan and Jack.  From this point on, they would never work together again without yelling at each other.  And Jack would never give characters away to Marvel again, outside of the Wrecker in Thor.  But nothing ever again in the FF.

Not true! FF 94 introduced Agatha Harkness, a property that's gone on to have a lot of staying power, despite that Roz told Jack to hold back the better first version. But we digress: Congrats Mark!

To my understanding, Goodman ordered no more continued stories at this time.  So Jack wrapped up the Ben Grimm, Slave storyline very awkwardly in FF 93.  Also to my understanding, Jack told Stan to start making up stories for a change.  Hence Agatha Harkness, the Monocle, and the Creature storylines.  I'm not sure if Stan or Jack came up with the Torch goes wild or the Sub-Mariner storylines.

Dam, that's cold Stan. Alicia is blind. She wasn't aware she had a giant melon until you pointed it out. Poor girl.

Let me speak to the power of the art. In spite of Stan's frustrations, Jack deliver's a suspenseful four panels. So close, and yet no one lays eyes on HIM. the irony of Alicia's eyes open wide, expressing a fear of that which she cannot see. Exceptional panels, each one driving you into conflict, combat, uncertainty. Joe Sinnott on top of it all at the peak of Kirby's Marvel output. I'm so glad you were able to get it back Mark :-) ****

The Alicia thing was a smoke screen so the red ghost could take over:)

Great page, glad it's back

Prime creativity by Kirby!  The Sinnott inks over are also very prized as we get a great demonstration of them every panel!  Krackle, power lines, flowing folds in the bed sheets and the distictive Kirby faces for the Enclave and Alicia!

Wow! Even without drawing a single superpowered character, Jack Kirby manages to build a suspenseful storyline in just four panels. That opening panel teases us with the appearance of what looks like Kirby Krackle. Then in the second panel, the narrator fires the Elelctro Shock Tube at the unseen villain, and in the fourth panel he shows the narrator being knocked back by whatever it is, and finally we return to the present where Alicia is being asked to save them...somehow. All without ever showing us the bad guy, Kirby has got us on edge. What a great storyteller he was.

Congats on getting this back home, Mark!  Like you say, every panel's a winner, and it's got the 4 even sized panel layout where each looks like its own splash.  Suh-weet, indeed!
