Description

My non-profit Inkwell Awards, in it's mission pursuit of promoting and educating about the art form of inking, runs annual events called Inking Challenges to show the public what each ink artist brings to the table from a penciller's work printed in blueline on board, and something usually different in approach from each participating artist. I only had time to do one character that Joe and his son Mark really pushed me to do and that was Black Panther in 2014. We started the program in 2011 with our special ambassador, inking master Joe Sinnott, and after he passed away in 2020 we named the events after him but featured other artists who had collaborated with him. In 2021 Ron Frenz agreed to participate as featured artist for the Joe Sinnott Tribute Inking Challenge with Thor. So for only the second time I had a rare gap in my schedule and I was fortunately able the time & effort to show respect to Joe.

This was only my 4th time inking over Ron and every time has been a privilege and a whole lot of fun as a fan of classic, retro Marvel art. This was my only 7th Thor commission (not counting an additional @6 that included him to date in Avengers team commissions). On the 11"x17" Kubert Strathmore 2-ply art board I inked the blueline image and in addition to my usual inking tools I added some classic dot zip for under the cape shadow and perspective zip for the background. This was completed August 8, 2021 and auctioned off in the subsequent Inkwell Awards fundraising auctions.
