DescriptionSTORM FROST UNLEASHEDI’ve been in a slump this past year (with the lack of work and all the strikes and still pending strikes) and have gotten so much joy in being a part of this community in whatever way I can be involved. I haven’t been in the right place to post anything these past few weeks, but was building up to finally post a big piece (for my X collection). This page from UCX #151 has so many wonderful things that I can enjoy. First off it’s from an issue when Uncanny X-Men is only in its 10th issue (starting with #142). It’s a really early piece of X history and the Cockrum cover sold me on everything when I was still learning about these characters. Who were these crazy characters and why is one of them quitting or leaving? I was in my early teens when my Aunt Grace took me to a comic shop in Southern CA, to treat me with a few books (I think she gave me $5 or so and let me shop around, this was a time when you could still get a few books, even a few decade old books for that amount). I was still very new into comics at this time and recall starting to enjoy the X-Men books. To get the best bang for my buck I turned to the X-Men Classic series so I could get a good chunk of books to read. It was then that I likely picked up X-Men Classic #55 (or I might have even been able to get the original X-Men #151 and a few Classic books) and saw this storyline of Kitty Pryde with her suitcase packed leaving the X-Men. This issue always brings such great nostalgia and soap-opera dramatics to the lives of the X people. Years later to now get a page from this monumental book (from my end) is truly a great achievement. There are so many great panels of art and story wise it’s a twist of characters. Emma Frost (who only just came into comics around 20 issues ago, X-Men #129) has mind control over Storm and after she convinces Storm to let Kitty come into their care at the Massachusetts Academy. Emma Frost takes a joy ride in Storm’s body, she unleashed Storm’s forces of nature and has all sorts of uncontrollable fun. This page features the flight and powers unleashed from someone out of their depths trying to control nature’s forces. I don’t really know much about James Sherman’s art career, but I really enjoy these panels. Joe Rubinstein’s inks and his work in comics is legendary and very X-citing to have some of his work in my collection. The panels are warped and twisted and the perspective for the horizon in the center panel is all over. I absolutely love the design of it, as it feels a bit of a vertigo effect, assuming to be in the mental space of the endorphin filled Emma as she flies around for the first time. We get to see Storm use her powers as if it were her first time, unleashing wind, thunder, lightning and snow. My favorite panel is Sherman’s design for Storm in the lower left. It’s how I like to imagine this weather Queen in full force of her talents, lightning practically coming out of her fingertips. And to top it all off, the top left panel features a really great quote from King Lear, of the mad King loosing his mind, returning to the wild outdoors and forces of nature (seen in the published page) which I was part of in my theatrical career in college. I lived that scene for a few months and it’s a great additional plus for this page (and Claremont combining some Shakespeare with X-Men is pretty Uncanny in many forms). Social/Sharing |

These images give you a sense of freedom and joy of what everyone likes to dream they have in a superpower in flight. Sherman does a great job of doing some of the Cockrum look. All those panel camera angles are fun and the wide shot is like storybook Wizard of OZ imagery of an endless road to follow.

Excellent Storm page. Not sure about this page in particular, but McLeod might've had a hand in it. His comments regarding this issue - "Jim abandoned this job, leaving some pages penciled, others just barely laid out, others not even started. I finished penciling it all and inked a few of the pages."

Oh I love that bit of history and getting his artistic hands on artwork is also very appealing. Thanks for sharing this info.

I like how this page features two weirdly recurring Emma plotlines: 1) joyriding in another X-Man's body and 2) starting shit with an X-Woman who is 1000% going to mess up her day later. I love Emma but she can't seem to resist sneaking up behind sleeping tigers with a giant airhorn haha.
The composition and scale on this page is great and you can still get the sense of unshackled joy from it even without the dialogue and context. Cool pickup!

Killer Uncanny X-Men page! What a great page drawn by James Sherman and inked by Joe Rubinstein! I love the storyline here, with Emma Frost controlling Storm's body and experiencing the power of manipulating nature for the very first time! There is a kind of joyous freedom to the art here, as Emma creates a storm and even buries a car in snow! Just a terrific pick-up, congrats!

Love this, man, as a fellow Ororo fan. Just the weather goddess in her element, enjoying the freedom and joy her gift brings. Great stuff. Congrats!

I really liked this 2 issue story arc. The cover to #152 is one of my favorites. Nice page from a great story.
