DescriptionHere's my only Walt Simonson page so far -- it's from the Marvel adaptation of the 1977 Steven Spielberg film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. While not the type of thing I typically collect, I really liked Simonson's penciling here along with the great inking of Klaus Janson.Walt signed this for me at the New York Comic Con in 2014 and Klaus signed it at the New York Comic Con in 2022. Sadly, I never got to meet the writer, Archie Goodwin. The husband and wife characters in the movie are played by Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr and obviously Marvel didn't have the rights to their likenesses. Maybe it's just me, but I think the Dad looks a bit like Foggy Nelson in panel 4. Social/Sharing |

Very cool!
Agreed does not look like Dreyfuss or Garr. I'd guess becaue it was done advance of the film and Walt may not have been sent pics. No internet then...

I would never have wanted to see Janson over Simonson, but the combo actually looks pretty amazing! Before I even read your title, I did think this was a Daredevil page because of Foggy!

The Marvel age of movie adaptations! They knew this was going to be a lavish production with Spielberg attached. Nice and gritty Hell's Kitchen finish to the art. It reflects the cinematography of the grainy 70's. If the kids want mini-golf, then he might as well move the family to Ohio and open a mini-golf and leave all this alien stuff behind.
