DescriptionEighth in the series - just imagine that, in 1960, Martin Goodman decides that comics have no future and closes Marvel down, forcing Lee and Kirby to seek work at National. And what if, after a couple of years producing back-up science fiction, war and monster stories for DC's anthologies, editor Murray Boltinoff (unsatisfied with the initial submission from Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani) asks Stan and Jack to see if they can do anything with the idea of the Doom Patrol?This time - the Doom Patrol must face the twin menaces of Eclipso and (transported to Earth-1 by the power of Eclipso's black diamond) Earth-2's Solomon Grundy! Can the world's strangest heroes prevail? Find out - inside! Adapted from Kirby's cover to Avengers #3 (inked by either Paul Reinman or Chic Stone, sources vary), using Grundy to substitute for the Hulk was an obvious choice, but I'd assumed I'd be able to find an aquatic villain to fill the Sub-Mariner's slot, until I noticed Subby's pointed ears, and recalled that the Mark Waid / Barry Kitson JLA: Year One series paired Grundy (and Clayface and the Thorn) with Eclipso, who had similarly-pointed ears - and an instant solution presented itself. Still one of the most recognizable layouts of the silver age! Nice how Baskerville adds to it by taking cues from later Kirby issues and inking in the details.
