Description

This cool Rick O'Shay daily is from October 9, 1958, and is the tail-end of a story that began on August 28. The desperadoes known as the Jim Boys, Frank and Jesse, were brought to justice by Rick and Hipshot. The gentlemen who came to gather the Jim Boys are Marshall Fat Fillon and his deputy, Chest-Rub. These characters are based on, of course, the Gunsmoke TV show, which started in 1955, featuring James Arness as Marshell Dillon and Dennis Weaver as Chester. As you can see from the additional images, Lynde did a really nice job with the caricatures of the actors.

I've long preferred Stan Lynde's more cartoony approach in the early years of Rick O'Shay and am happy to have finally acquired a few of them. There's one more in this gallery from the same story line.

Really cool with the cross cultural reference and Lynde being able to use his style throughout to mix the caricatures in. It' sure to be one of the more significant standouts of the strip as Gunsmoke was such an institution on TV.
