DescriptionOn this date 30 years ago, Mike Mignola’s HELLBOY #1 was released to the world.Hellboy’s wild introduction in NEXT MEN #21 set the stage (and tone) for his own series, when he would become fully realized. SEED OF DESTRUCTION is also where the Mignolaverse truly began. On this date 30 years ago, I traded a box of prime back issues for shop credit to a newly opened neighborhood store desperate for inventory. Like an undisciplined lottery winner, I went to town that day and grabbed pretty much everything off the stands. This issue, though, stood out. I had enjoyed Mignola’s Marvel art, and would have gotten it just based off that. But this cover was different; it beckoned with the promise of new discovery. It did not disappoint. To say the least. The store would fold shortly after and I didn’t get to spend all that credit, but I still have that copy! Happy 30th anniversary to Mike Mignola’s signature creation and contribution to the comics medium. Social/Sharing |

My first thought: "Is this what I think it is?" And then it was. Fantastic. Thanks for sharing this piece of art that ushered in a new era for both Mignola and comics fans.

I still have my copy of the original comic too but to have the original art would be better.

Wow, an epic piece of Mignola and Hellboy history! And do I spy some Art Adams bonus art on there too?!

Is there a better compliment than "baller?" If there is, you deserve it. Absolutely tremendous. Congrats!

No way! Iconic to the extreme. Maybe the most significant indie intro cover in Western comics

It's hard for an individual piece to stand out in your tremendous collection, but wow this does!

Unreal, man, whew. Obviously a super imporant book, to say the least, but regardless of that the image alone is outstanding...what a way to start a run. Big congrats, Felix!

I forgot to say something sacreligious. The cover would have looked better without the small circular inclusion on the bottom right. Lol. Compositionally, I mean.

It can't have been 30 years... What a truly wonderful piece Felix, how amazing it must be to see for real. Sorry about your lost shop credit all those years ago though ha ha.

WOW! so many questions. how where when??? I am going to assume you have had this for a LONG time or traded something magical for it. What an icon cover and probably one of if not the most imporant creator owned comics in the last 30 years. So Iconic, still have my original issue and signed by the man himself back in 94. Congrats!

Wow! The cover to the first Hellboy? You've got to be kidding me! I can still remember reading that first issue and I never dreamed that it would become the origin of a comic book legend! Mike Mignola created something that most comic book artists and writers only dream of--A character that would live on long after them. It appears to me that Hellboy will do just that. He has become more than just a comic book character, he's a movie star! He's a legend! Phenomenal get, Felix, congrats!

You're not going to tell us how you acquired the cover?? There has to be a story there! And is the little Art Adams circle a stat or original art?

I got a taste for greats and the fate of Anung
Cover he murdered when it screamed “art drop"
'Cause Legend caught the bug
To get this was no choice
And listen to this demon man before they ban the voice
Ride the line to Destruction that you got
Mignola the first cover to run is the first to get art
Whoever said that what I say and portray is anniversary
Need to come pick it with Art’s Monkey for me
And find the black and crack the fact
They take that Seed back
'Cause they don't want destruct with that
There's too many covers to try to claim
If art collectors could get it, nobody would pay up for it
Appetite for Destruction

No disrespect to Byrne's FF cover but this piece of history should be above that in number of comments for the day so how about one last push?
Prime-era Mignola. Congrats but how about the story behind its acquisition that it seems everyone is clamouring for?

Super interesting. I've only had one piece of Mignola Hellboy art and strangely enough, the drawing was almost identical to this image. Supposedly it was done for a shirt design and when I do a side by side, there are subtle differences, but it's basically the same drawing (right down to the statuary). My piece was dated '93' in the signature box, but I don't see a date on this cover. Would be interesting to know which was drawn first. Anyway, congratulations on a truly historic piece of Mignola artwork. It's a great cover and probably my single favorite image of Hellboy.

Wow! I also remember buying this issue on the stands. Cool seeing a cover with the logo, the credits, and all the icons on it. It's complete! Rich inks around those flames. Congrats.
