DescriptionHere is the other Cicely Mary Barker Flower Fairy pencil study drawing.Artist: Cicely Mary Barker (1895-1973) Title: Pencil study inscribed 'Barrie Papenfus for Candytuft (Flower Fairies of the Garden)', early 1940s Medium: Pencil on paper Size: 280mm x 230mm Signed: yes, monogrammed ‘CMB’ Inscription: On the front in pencil “Barrie Papenfus For Candytuft (Flower Fairies of the Garden)”, and monogram. Letter enclosed in the frame reads: 8/10/85 Cranford White Knowle Road Buxton Dear Hazel A note to thank you for Saturday – xxxx the warm welcome, & the wise words. Healxxx enjoyed it all, x specially the pleasure of meeting so very many delightful Sams. Herewith too the little pencil sketch of Cis’. It’s not very decorative in itself, but interesting when you xxxit’s xx the preparation for the eventual illustration. I can’t tell you either who the little boy was – very often her young models xxx just friendly children whom she met on the ‘heath’ at Croydon near the wooden room where she worked in the garden. An unfinished (but exquisite) pencil sketch of the Virgin with the Christ child which I had, I got an artistic friend to lightly colour wash in the shades that Cis often used, but I don’t know that could work with this one. Anyway, I’m delighted for it to go into the keeping of a CMB admirer. With kindest regards, Yours sincerely M E. Wynne Willson Ps. I told Joyce that you were looking into the labels supply! Verso: an ineligible name and address written in ink and partially covered with tape. Verso on frame : “This is an original drawing by Cicely Mary Barker. It was given to me by her niece Mary Wynne-Willson of Buxton in 1985”. Mr Wynne-Willson's ancestors include Jane Austen and the illustrator Cicely Mary Barker - The Times: 21 Sept 2017, so I guess this is the link. Notes: Flower Fairies of the Garden was first published in 1944; London, Blackie. Cicely Mary Barker always used real-life models for her paintings. Most of the models came from the kindergarten her sister Dorothy ran in the back room of the house in which they lived. She also painted the children and relatives. I presume 'Barrie Papenfus’ is one of these models. Social/Sharing |

It's always tougher to draw children sized characters as their proportions aren't exactly like adults. This cracks the code and does it to bring an innocent childlike spirit!

Yeah it's a knack to get these qualities into the fantasy image. Cicely Mary Barker always used real-life models for her paintings. Most of the models came from the kindergarten her sister Dorothy ran in the back room of the house in which they lived. I presume 'Barrie Papenfus’ was one of these models.
I actually saw an article the other day featuring one of these boys and him now.
