Description

Client Danny Kiihnl returns to my Inking Commission gallery for his 6th piece and my 18th from my old Warlock art partner Angel Medina. As before, this was a smaller 8.5"x11" pencil rough on paper or board that I was asked to scan, convert to blueline and print, enlarged to 11"x17", on 2-ply smooth Kubert board. I drew in more sketchy details in pencil as a guide and proceeded to my finishing inks. Besides embellishing more into the Banner to Hulk transforming figures, I decided to blacken in the rounded ground which I started filling in with a Pitt large brush marker for a solid black foundation and while doing so I realized that I preferred the line texture as it added depth and added some kinetic uneasiness to the powerful transformation... I chose to add Kirby krackle to the background also to further emphasize that epic evolution (and because I absolutely LOVE that energy stuff!). And I added some flash lines below Banner and around Hulk's head.

But after scanning and editing out the blues in Photoshop and adjusting thresholds for the lightest and darkest balance of lines plus some additional eraser cleanup I realized that I went too far and the image looked too light and bleached out. So I rescanned it after adding the further revisions: I reworked the ground with some Copic wide marker and razor scrapings needed on the left bottom side. I added some X-acto blade razor scrapings to show his Hulk arms being raised which played well with my added movement lines around the extremities. And changed the credits placement. And THAT scanned and edited file came out perfectly this time! The produced final work very much pleased the client and I'm very happy with it, too. (Note: after the fact, I wished I'd remembered to add cracks on the ground under the fully-transformed Hulk's feet.) It was completed on 4/3/2024. I am thinking of commissioning Tom Chu to color it later.
