DescriptionI rarely purchase complete issues but this is one of the rare exceptions. This was the final - and sixth - issue of the acclaimed series by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, entitled God Country. I had wanted to post the cover as well as all the pages for some years now, but somehow never had the time to get around to it. I nearly didn't manage to purchase the book though as the pivotal double splash towards the end of the book (and the series) was (if my memory serves me correctly) in the hands of Donny (and understandably so because it is the best and most poignant set of pages in the entire series). Fortunately, Donny was kind enough to let the pages go so that the entire book could be purchased. Although it is wholly belated, I would like to thank Felix for helping in the entire process. The reason why I didn't post this book on CAF was because I wanted to write a really extended synopsis. I will be working on it some day. In the meantime, here's a truncated summary from a description of the present piece which I have drawn from: God Country is about how an unearthly tornado comes to a farm in Texas and ends up giving a giant mystical sword to an elderly man with Alzheimer's Disease. The sword restores the man's memories and personality. The man and his family then receive a visit from the God of War, Aristus and the God of Death, Balegrim. The story blends realism and fantasy in a unique fashion. The lead character is an old man named Emmett who lives in a small town in West Texas. Emmett has severe Alzheimer's until a tornado brings a magic sword called Valofax to him, curing the disease. However, Balegrim the God of Death and ruler of Hell wants the sword, so he kidnaps Emmett's young granddaughter, forcing Emmett to go on a mission to Hell to retrieve her. To which I would add that in addition to the brilliant artwork and story, there is a grim reminder about another great - and insidious - enemy: Alzheimer's Disease. For those of you whose families have been impacted by it, you will know how painful it is to have only the physical shell of the person with you but not the person himself or herself. This parallel thread in this series was what made it so impactful insofar as I was concerned. You will notice, though, that I am posting only related artwork. Let me explain. After I purchased the entire issue of God Country #6, I asked Felix about the variant cover. Unfortunately, it had disappeared somewhere and I had forgotten all about it - until it surfaced in a recent auction. And this is it. That is why in life, I always say, "Never say never" (unless, for example, it is a page from Tales of Suspense #39!). I now have all the artwork produced for God Country #6. This variant cover by Gerardo Zaffino is amazing (I have long admired his work as well). It is, in a sense, a kind of "appetizer" until I can get around to posting the entire issue of God Country #6. For those who have had the patience to read thus far, thank you for your kind attention! Social/Sharing |

This series was when I noticed the start of the craze of the Felix instant sell outs. In the end, my favorite pages of the series are the quiet moments of the son (who's actually us) when he talks about having to deal with his father having Alzheimers. I don't even remember if they put the name to the disease in the book. This however is Emmet in a well designed power composition by Zaffino. Valofax is drawn large, mythically large, in a manner that suits all of his artwork.

Well said, as always, Marcus. This was a really unique series. Brilliant in its execution over a relatively short mini-series. We rarely encounter such powerful stories that still stay true to the fantasy and action which we also like.

It was a memorable story for sure. The Zaffino covers provided a nice contrasting style to Shaw's main art. Good stuff!

Many thanks, James. Yes, and respectfully, this cover is in fact much more striking than the original cover (which is why I feel so fortunate to be able to purchase it, albeit after so many years).

I may be wrong, but I don't recall the disease's name being mentioned in the story. Either way, it was a wholly unique and inventive way to bring attention to the effects of an insidious disease. Congratulations on owning all the art made for this issue. I've been saying it for a few years now, Gerardo Zaffino has surpassed his late father and I'm sure Jorge is smiling down upon him now in agreement.

Many thanks, Rubén. You may well be correct, but the condition is clear right from the outset/first issue. This cover is indeed more dynamic than the original and it really rounds off the entire original artwork for this particular (and finale) issue.

Very cool! Zaffino never disappoints.
Many thanks, Eric. He is a wonderful artist indeed. I might be wrong, but there does not appear to be a lot of his work out there.

I haven't read everything more modern but for me, God Country was the most accessible highlight of the 2010s - wise call on the complete story!

Many thanks, Mark. Yes, I don't read a whole lot of modern comics but this one was really exceptional - which was why I made the effort to purchase the entire final issue.

Many thanks, Nick. I really enjoyed this mini-series and, as mentioned, hence my taking the bold step of purchasing the entire book. As also mentioned, I am so glad to be able to obtain this variant cover as well (which is, respectfully) much more striking than the original cover.

Congrats on a great score! I was snapping up GC pages from every felix drop starting with #2 (which wasn't a pre-announced drop - they evolved as a thing throughout the series) and was pretty bummed #6 was bought complete. But whatcha gonna do - all I can say now is congrats on buying the book and also keeping it. I look forward to seeing pages here some day.
