I think that this sequence must resonate with anyone that has ever tried to paint, compose music or write a story.

It is amazing how Mr Jaffee makes this composition, gag, and philosophical statement look like effortless fun!

This strip would have been published in the final year that he drew Tall Tales for the New York Herald Tribune. Originally, his strips had no words in them so that they could be sold to publications anywhere in the world. Jaffee stated in interviews that Syndicate editors insisted that he start to include English into his gags, so perhaps the superfluous sign 'Inspiration Point' was an attempt to satisfy the editorial demands?

Jaffee makes this so relatable, but it's the execution of that center section where he gives the frustrated artist three beats of timing to bring out the most humor.

You are right. Looking at it again, I further appreciate that the three central three beats of worry are framed by joyful motion/activity (leading up to level footing and then back down again).
