Really nice how everything is tied together by the level of darkness! Knights fantasy and science fiction within one piece is very eye catching when the composition and the lighting are this dramatic.

Nice seeing SFBC magazine related art. Any idea about the art? Why they went 2 tone? To save money on printing? Kelly Freas is famous but what about the other artists. Did they typically hire artist who did book covers? Any info would be appreciated.

The SFBC has a long history of using great artists to illustrate their Things to Come flyer! Some ot these include Virgil Finlay, Richard Powers, Kelly Freas, Richard Corben, Michael Whelan, etc... My friend Doug Ellis has written a multi part article on the Black Gate Science Fiction website that addresses exactly what you are asking about and I highly recommend it! Here is the link, https://www.blackgate.com/2020/11/22/the-art-of-things-to-come-part-1-1953-1957/

Done from dark to light. Interesting choice of ground. Freas was always experimenting.
