Description

I'm selling this page at the September 12 - 14 Heritage Comic Art Signature Auction #7436. I will remove it after the sale. Thanks

Here is an early Marvel Star Wars cover by the late great Dave Cockrum. It is in really beautiful condition. The cover was published by Marvel comics for the U.K. market. It is mistakenly cover dated February 29th, 1978, but was actually released with the other March 1st Marvel releases at the time. February 29th, 1978 was not a leap year and therefor never occurred. The book went to press with the wrong cover date and (as far as I know) the entire print run was printed with the error. It contains the second half of issue number two of the 1977 Marvel comics "Star Wars" series that was being published in the United States. The contents of the book serialize a portion of the first Star Wars film "A New Hope" by George Lucas. This page is dated and stamped "1977 Marvel comics" on its reverse. Its newsstand price was 10 P at the time of release. Inked by Mike Esposito.

(Summary of the contents to "Star Wars Weekly" issue 4)
This issue is where Ben and Luke meet Han and Chewie in the Cantina for the first time. It starts off with Ben using the Jedi mind trick on some Storm Troopers, "These aren't the droids you're looking for". The two then enter the cantina only to have some strange weirdos approach them. We quickly learn "Old Ben" does not take kindly to strangers. After "disarming" the strangers the two meet Han Solo who is in desperate need of credits to cover a debt. Ben comes to terms with Han. Greedo enters to let Han know Jabba wants the money Han owes him. The two exchange some heated words and Greedo pulls his blaster on Han. Han proceeds to shoot Greedo (tout de suite) after which he gets on with his day. He quickly discovers his "cargo" is hot (wanted by the empire) and definitely more trouble than they are worth. However, at this point his options are limited. He is in need of credits to pay Jabba. All Han can do is move forward and let the situation play out. As soon as The Falcon exits Tatooine's atmosphere the group find they are being pursued by several empire "Star Destroyers", and they need to enter Hyperspace quick. Luke feels Han oversold his and the Falcons capabilities as it is not living up to its purported reputation and proceeds to lodge a flurry of complaints to the captain (Han). Han takes note of Luke's criticism, calls Luke a dumb hillbilly and threatens to toss him out of the ship into space if he doesn't slow his role. The Falcon finally jumps into hyperspace and Luke chillaxes.

Good eye! I forgot to mention that. They actually didn't include the famous dice visible on the art on the finished published cover.  They were hidden behind the star wars logo when it went to press.
