Description

Star Wars: Dark Times #1 Cover
Art by Doug Wheatley

Happy International Star Wars Day (And Free Comic Book Day!)! May The 4th Be With You.

Sharing a penciled cover by Doug Wheatley to Star Wars: Dark Times #1 from Dark Horse Comics, released in 2006.

Dark Times #1 features a whole bunch of minor 1st appearances and even though it is now considered "legends", ie not canon, it's a pretty cool run from that era. Written by Randy Stradley (under the name Mick Harrison).

The first story arch is called "Path To Nowhere" (the first 5 issues of the run) and this issue features first appearances of Braxis, Mesa and Resa Greenbark, Meekerdin-ma, Mezgraf, Schurk-Heren, Lynaliskar K'ra Snyffulnimatta, Crys Taanzer, Ko Vakier, Vill, and an unidentified brigade and Vill's regiment from the 501st Legion. It also features first mentions of Gahg, Limbfree, and Mulleen. The cover's main characters is former Jedi General Dass Jennir.

Issue synopsis:

The dark times are here. Even as the worlds of the former Republic are drawn into the iron grip of Palpatine's Empire, the galaxy seems adrift in a sea of chaos, lawlessness, and despair. On Coruscant, Darth Vader waits for his Master to reveal his vision for the future. But is there a plan beyond obtaining power? On New Plympto, Jedi Master Dass Jennir leads a Nosaurian army in a war they have already lost. Is this what it now means to be a Jedi? Dark Times #1 is the gateway to a new era in Star Wars history, an era where the future is grim, evil is on the rise, and all paths seem to lead nowhere…

It's been fun exploring more of the legends comics and a side to Star Wars storytelling I'm a bit less familiar with.

Excited to dive into the rest of Star Wars day goodies today, seeing all the cool artwork posted to CAF, watching the new trailer for The Acolyte, and checking out the brand new animated limited series Tales Of The Empire tonight.

Cheers Star Wars fans.

In the May of the fourth
I was told what it means to be a fan
Now I've reached that page
I've tried to collect those things the best I can
No matter what I buy
I find my way to the Legends camp

Good times, Dark Times
I know you love to share
When my canon left home
For a Jedi man
Well, I still don't seem to care

Sixteen I fell in love
With a world that’s sweet by Wheatley
It only took a couple of pays
'Til it was sent to me
I swore that it would be all mine
And love this ‘til the end
But Jedi on “Path to Nowhere”
I got this cover sent

Good times, Dark Times
We know you had to share
When Anakin left home
For a Jedi man
Well, I still got Star Wars here

hell yeah. nicely done Marcus. One of my fav Zeppelin songs. I engineered/produced another band covering it way back in the day nearly 20 years ago in Boston and this sparked a random memory from that

Nice! He's got a beautiful, fine lined detailed style. Maybe consider posting a second scan with the line art darkened in Photoshop so people can see the lines better?

Thanks Ruben! yeah the very fine lined detail is what drew me to the cover, almost Mobius like or Geoff Darrow perhaps. I've never tweaked a picture or scan in photoshop of pencils to make the lines more visible though. Is that common to do for the main image or did you mean for a secondary image option?

Yeah, Mobius & Geoff Darrow-esque is exactly what it made me think of. As for darkening the scan of a "pencils only" piece, I mean as an additional image for sure. No one should ever manipulate the main image to make it appear as if it's darker than it appears in person. I'm just suggesting making a copy of the scan and darkening the line art with the "Levels" tool in Photoshop, or lightness and contrast if that's your preference, and adding it as an additional image and mentioning it in the description. Just because it's obvious the line art is great, but it's so nice looking that it would be even better if we could see it more clearly, as it's very light and difficult to get a good view of.

It's not typical of me to re-respond to a year old comment but I finally got a better scan of this cover, the linework is far more visible now finally. No photoshop involved just a goood color scan

This is the May! I have a noticeable Wheatley hole in my Dark Horse era portfolios, that might just be my next OA quest. He conjured some stunning alien panoramas and alien species throughout his run on this series. I especially love those dinosaur inspired Nosaurians. This one is a banger, Kavi!
