DescriptionFolks of a certain age, and old-school space heads, may recall the wonderful umbrella-shaped, ion-powered vehicles portrayed in Disney's "Mars and Beyond" TV series of the late fifties; those were designed by Ernst Stuhlinger, a member of Wernher Von Braun's team brought to the US via Operation Paper Clip.Stuhlinger worked with Von Braun at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, which was eventually absorbed into NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. He was a career-long proponent of ion drives and continued refining his concept; this 1964 painting illustrates the then-current version of his proposal. Interestingly, if you check my Ron Miller works, you'll see Ron's rendition of the same ship, painted much later for Smithsonian Air & Space magazine. About 18 x 24 inches. Social/Sharing |

Fantastic cross section image! Great imagineering taking existing science and adding imagination and extrapolation of theorums to their logical conclusion.
