Description

Yes, yes, I know... I'm getting very predictable here!... After all, it's common knowledge that French people have a fondness for Jerry Lewis that is apparently hard to explain. Right?

Well, I don't know about the 68-odd million other French people (give or take a few), but I have to admit that some of his movies (with or without Dean Martin) continue to strike a chord within.

But, does that translate automatically to comics? No, not necessarily. Except that the comic book version of the character, especially in its later incarnation (that's late 60's) definitely took a turn to the zaniest and wackiest, with no holds barred and, sometimes, a real taste (sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes both) for the extreme...

You can see it here with Renfrew, Jerry's nephew, embarking for a wonderful stay in a kids'camp which looks so engaging that the story is going to evolve into a remake of the Great Escape...

Bob Oksner was the regular artist of the strip for most issues (124 in total from 1952 to 1971) and you can clearly see here that he was the man for the job (you should check his Angel & the Ape, as well!)...

But, when the series got axed by DC (alongside the whole line of humor books), it quickly sank into an oblivion from which I'm afraid there is no return, even in reprint format!

If you want to know, publication in France was spotty, to say the least... But I managed to keep in mind the few stories I could find and, consequently, I jumped at the opportunity to get a quartet of pages from this now long-forgotten period...

Oh, well... You never know...

PS: Check the nice couple of sketches on the back of the page!

Very fun with Jerry appearing and having the cartoony likeness done in the Oksner manner.  The last panel is fun with the concerned expression.

Thankd Marcus! While Jerry is obviosly the most realistic-looking character of the strip, he's certainly not out of place,here...
