DescriptionI'm lucky that I only live about 26 miles from this cathedral in Birmingham, and so have viewed these incredible windows, which are obviously still in situ. We were very lucky to be able to purchase at auction recently the artwork for the Last Judgement window.Artist: Thomas George Bowman (1836-1917) [Employed by Morris & Co 1877-1909], After Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) [designer]; William Morris (1834-1896) [designer]; By Morris & Co. Title: ‘Last Judgement’ stained glass design for the west end window, St Philip’s Church, Birmingham (Cathedral). 1896/97 Medium: watercolour and ink on paper Size: 475 x 175mm, framed 630 x 320mm. Inscription: Not had the art out of the frame yet Signed: Not had the art out of the frame yet According to the Burne-Jones Catalogue Raisonne “By Thomas George Bowman, After Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, By Morris & Co., By Alfred George Stokes, By George Frederick Titcomb, By Robert Walters, By Christopher Baker Wren The Last Judgment is magnificent, though it is more epiphany than judgment. The city of this world collapses; Christ holds out his wounded hands; the messengers of the spirit hang in the air. Morris and Burne-Jones thought these windows their finest, and it is hard to disagree.” https://www.eb-j.org/browse-artwork-detail/MTI1Mg== Social/Sharing |

Looks in pretty good shape, the stained glass window does show that there used to be a lot more red than what's hinted at in the line work art.

Yes the cathedral in Birmingham is in great shape and is used a lot. The actual stained glass windows have recently been renovated. I think the slight shift to a brighter red is probably the result of the final step in the process, the actual window makers. The prelim drawing to this had very little colour, and so Bowman brings the colour together from EBJ's drawings and design. Thanks for coming in to view as usual.
