DescriptionHaving just posted my first Jack Kirby Fourth World piece, this is a kind of "Jack Kirby Week". This spectacular wraparound cover isn't by the King although the book for which the cover was produced was, I believe, the first comprehensive survey of Jack's extensive body of work (not forgetting, of course, the wonderful Jack Kirby Treasury volumes by Greg Theakston). The artwork was by Kevin Eastman (who is, of course, famous as being the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). This is very much a nostalgic get. I recall being so amazed by the book when it was first published that I spent even more funds obtaining a Kirby-signed limited edition of the same. The book itself was written by Ray Wyman. And here is the write-up on Heritage on the piece itself (it also came with production color art as well, as is also noted in this write-up): This wraparound cover (used for the hardcover dustjacket and the softcover release) features some of Jack Kirby's most important creations! It is fair to say that this only barely scratches the surface, but it does include: Captain America, Thor, the Silver Surfer, Mr. Fantastic, the Red Skull, Loki, Doctor Doom, and Galactus from Marvel Comics; and Mister Miracle, Orion, Kalibak, and Darkseid from Kirby's Fourth World Saga at DC Comics. The loving tribute was created by Kevin Eastman (co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) in ink on Bristol board. Signed in the lower right of the matted 25" x 14.75" image area. ... This original art piece comes with the production color art as well. The color art was created by blue line printing the linework onto Bristol board, and hand coloring with watercolor. This was dressed with the linework printed in black on acetate to top it. Social/Sharing |

Eastman must have had a blast doing this! Wow!
Many thanks, Rick. I initially thought to myself when I saw the cover of the book way back - why isn't Jack doing this? Now that I reflect on this question decades down the road, perhaps this was because Jack wasn't in good health and, indeed, sadly passed away a couple of years later. But this cover is very nice indeed.

Double wow! First, I'm not even familiar withthe book this cover was used for, secondly, this must be the first time it has ht the market in the internet era because it's the first time I'm seeing it! What else can be said about this that you didn't already mention? It's both Kirbyesque and Eastmanesque at the same time. I think Kevin did a great job retaining the overall style and flavour that Kirby had, while still showing signs that it's his own work rather than Jack's. A splendid piece of art!

Many thanks, Rubén. Yes, I think that this is the first time that this particular piece of artwork has hit the market. And many thanks for your clear and perceptive description. I can imagine that Kevin must have felt so very privileged and honored to have been asked to do this. Jack Kirby was a shining inspiration to countless artists - and continues to be so even today. I never had the privilege of meeting him in person but am glad that I did pluck up the courage to write to him - and received such a gracious and kind response from both him and Roz. That is why I am doubly glad to be the steward of this particular piece.

Many thanks. In addition to the nostalgic element which I have mentioned, the artwork itself is, as you have so perceptively pointed out, an integration of both Kirby and Eastman.

The Marvel vs DC Kirby crossover we never got to see! Eastman's work is heavily influenced by Kirby, so this must have been an honor for him to be chosen out fo the many in the industry who cite Kirby as their influence.

Many thanks, Marcus. Yes, indeed, and the artwork of Eastman does surprisingly work very well on this cover (as some have already pointed out).

Many thanks, James. OT, but apologies for missing your (great) show although I caught up with it later.

Many thanks for your very kind words. Unfortunately, as I collect across a wide spectrum, there isn't as much X-Men artwork as I would like (which is, of course, your forte).
