Description

Kelly Freas double page title splash for "The Lion Game" by James H. Schmitz. This novel published in two parts, stars Telzey Amberdon, one of James H. Schmitz's most popular characters who appeared in a number of short stories and two novels. This illustration was published in Analog Science Fiction - August 1971. This illustration is ink over graphite on Crescent Illustration Board and image size is approximately 11 X 17 inches.

This is fantastic! I'm sure I was exposed to his work even earlier than I was aware of, but I guess my first conscious awareness happened with the rock band Queen's News of the World album cover (which I understand is based on an even earlier Freas work). Love the pose and positioning of the woman here. Plus the striping on her legs make for a fun and interesting visual effect. Again, terrific piece!

Great concept with such a playful tease of danger as the mousetrap could be sprung if she weighed an ounce more! The technical aspects of Freas' illustration can't be praised enough. It is apparent here as it is in all of his works to make the impossible believable.
