Description

Any day I can add one of Frederick Burr Opper's later political cartoons to my collection is a good day! This piece is from Opper's ongoing "Freeneasy Film Co." cartoons, using featuring some aspect of the government. In this case, Uncle Sam is freely handing out dough to foreign countries, while the tax payers and "common people" pay the price. The piece was published on February 4, 1921, so there was likely a lot of money being spent post-WWI.

I love, love, love Opper's later pen work, with the scratchy weight of the bigfoot figures. They always bring a smile to my face.

This piece came from the Denis Kitchen collection. When I removed the piece from it's mat, I found Denis' old Princeton, Wisconsin address on the back. It's the same address from when I used to work for him in 1989 and 1990. And now the piece is back home in Wisconsin.

Pretty cool when Uncle Sam became the icon to represent America to the rest of the world. It is that kind of policy that made America have so much influence around the world and become a superpower after the first World War that shaped the rest of the world.
