Description

I posted the first page of Caroline Cash's "Danny's" story yesterday and mentioned I'd be posting other pages when the mood strikes. The mood has struck.

Cash's "Danny's" story is replete with sense memories of a now-closed Chicago bar and dance spot. In previous pages, Cash depicts several aspects of "Danny's": the music played, Danny's patrons, and the comfy couch near the bar. Cash reserves the single splash page in the story for a lively and dynamic depiction of the Danny's dance floor.

The impact of this lively and engrossing splash page derives from how Cash is able to depict the Danny's dance floor in a way that fully captures its sights, sounds, characters, and emotions. A dancer is doing The Robot; a couple is locked into each other; multiple dancers are exulting in the sound and another two dancers are exiting the dance floor after exhausting themselves. The musical notes frame the dance floor and give context to the whole experience. Although Cash is a largely autobiographical cartoonist their strength lies in observation of both the people and spaces around her. This splash in particular has an almost journalistic quality in how Cash takes in the entire scene and lovingly depicts it.

Cash's work is evolving and improving with every successive issue of her one-person anthology series Pee Pee Poo Poo (available through Silver Sprocket Comics). Beyond the title of the series, which echoes/pokes fun at the titles of some of Cash's underground and alternative comics predecessors, Cash's work has a playfulness that suggests they takes the work seriously but not themselves or their identity as a cartoonist. Their work is highly recommended both for its current strengths as well as the promise shown in this story and others.

I love how you described it as "journalistic", I totally see that! What a great splash with so many little details and nuggets to notice each time you look at it. I think I counted 24 figures within the piece but I'm sure I missed some. Love seeing the different clothes and acessories people have, wonder what that 1996 tour t-shirt was from. Another really cool page!

Another fun page, but kudos to you, Mark, for your ever excellent descriptive writeups as well!

Cash is money!  It takes the approach of a rock documentary giving us the flavor of Danny's.  It's a place where nobody knows your name because that's the way you liked it.
