DescriptionThe planet Tamaran gave writer Marv Wolfman and his artists plenty of opportunity to inject some Barsoomian tropes into his superhero comics. This issue, and this page, find Starfire's brother and sister engaged in one of their frequent fights about who will rule the planet, the galaxy, etc. The rivalry between princess Koriand'r and her sister Kommand'r seemed very much like the Lilandra/Deathbird relationship in X-Men, which after all was selling very well for Marvel. The dialogue addresses the uncomfortable notion that people will follow even an evil leader who promises them that the quality of their lives will improve. This rings true as something that happens in the real world. Baretto and Tanghal did a very credible job following the art style which George Perez had set up for his characters in stories that mixed space opera with soap opera. Kommand'r basically looks like Kory, with Dragon Lady's arched eyebrows added for extra menace. Note Komand'r's Kirby Krackle in panel one. The long verticals give a sense of their dangerous height. Panel three has a terrific face. "You will burn in damnation" is a funny bit of dialogue. It may be an attempt to skirt the Comics Code, which might have looked askance at "burn in hell." The book was originally published in the "Baxter paper" series which didn't need CCA approval, but it was going to be reprinted a year later under the CCA, so maybe this was a proactive move by Wolfman, who was both writer and editor. Or perhaps Tamarans have a concept of "burning in damnation" that still doesn't translate well into English as "hell?" Eh, I'm overthinking it, but that's part of the nitpicking fun, forty years later. The page is huge -- 20"x13". All the word balloons are barely attached, except the one in the first panel, which fell off sometime in the past and was inexpertly reattached in somewhat the wrong place. Social/Sharing |

A spectacular Komand'r page with beautiful figure work by the terribly underrated Baretto!

Some great artistry by Baretto to finish off this Tamaran saga that started way back in the NTT non baxter series. It seemed like Wolfman was bringing resolution to a lot of these lingering story threads and shaking things up for this title.
