DescriptionI first picked up this comic as Deathlok Special #3 from a 7-11 Spinner Rack (probably b/c the prestige format version was sold out at the local comic shop).It was 1990 and I was part of the Alvarado Middle School Band at the time. Our Band Instructor at the time was Mr. Tatum. We had some parade or some such over the weekend and I was at the classroom meet-up before the parade early reading my comics. Mr. Tatum walks by, looks at what I'm reading and says, "Death Okay?!?!?!?!" misreading the title of the comic. He then shrugged disappointedly and continued getting ready. I felt bad one day when he forgot his daily donut and gave him mine. It was an Entenmann's Chocolate Donut, which I guess he had never seen one before, b/c he gave me a look of disbelief (as in 'are you pranking me?' or 'Is this a real donut?') You know I LOVE Cowan Deathlok - great page and that last panel is just the icing on the cake.

best Death Okay page I've ever seen!!! ;-p - Mr. Tatum seems legit tho.

I love the Cowan pencils but also love Magyar's inks. He always made Cowan look good. It's been so many years since I had an Entenmann's Chocolate Donut, I no longer even recall what I thought of them, but I'm goona go with "delicious", simply because I've always loved donuts!
By the way, I love the juxtaposition between your absolute joy and Cowan's misery in that photo! 😂

I love seeing Cowan's art in black and white. Fantastic pick up my friend and even cooler that you got to talk with the artist directly about it.

An only child alone and wild, a comicbook reader's son
Cowan was meant for different work
Denys art was known Tatum
He left his home and bought this one, a solitary page
And he gave to me a gift I know, it's never Death Okay
A Deathlok fan of comics denied at San Jose
He tried to be a soldier once, Denys comics wouldn't wait
He earned his love through Entenmanns, a hungering donut fan
His gentle means of art specials took me years to understand
The leader of the band is tired in his lines at comic shows
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is donut holes
My life has been a poor attempt to reunite the band
I'll just be leaving Galaxy as the leader of the fans

Nice story to pair with nice art! Loved Cowan's work on the character and this run is what I think of when I think Deathoka..I mean Deathlok :) Sweet Magyar inks in that last panel! Congrats!
