Description

14.5 x 18.5 page from 2000 AD Prog #592 (1988)

Some quick background on the series: Nemesis is a demonic alien who fights against the xenophobic regime of Torquemada, Grand Master of the Terran Empire. Really, that's all you need to know.

I recently re-read the entirety of the Nemesis series, created by Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill, which was serialized semi-regularly in 2000 AD from 1980 to the late 1990s. On my re-read, I was completely engrossed by the Nemesis stories Mills and artist John Hicklenton worked on, particularly the "Deathbringer" and "Two Torquemadas" storylines. Hicklenton's art was the real revelation during my re-read. His art stood out for its high level of detail, the compelling and offbeat figure posing (especially of the Nemesis character), and the evident delight he took in rendering and amplifying the grotesque on each page.

The series kept me coming back for each installment---due in no small part to the ongoing conflict between Nemesis and Torquemada which, in the course of the series, claims both of their children and spouses. The dynamic between the two central characters was always compelling and often reads as petty and personal despite the stakes of their conflict. Also especially amusing was the disdain Nemesis expresses toward Earthlings, despite working with human resistance fighters throughout the series--most notably Purity Brown.

This page is from the “Deathbringer” story in Nemesis: Book Nine, which finds Nemesis pursuing Torquemada and changing his appearance to that of a woman who has become intimately involved with Torquemada. To keep up appearances Nemesis indulges in an, um, awkward embrace with Torquemada in the bottom panel before revealing himself on the next page.

I'm very unfamiliar with Nemesis the Warlock, so much so in fact that I never knew until now that anyone other than Kevin O’Neill had ever drawn any. I've never even heard of this artists, but boy is this work fabulous! Incredible stuff. Had he been working at Marvel at the same time he was doing this, he would've become a fan favourite for sure!

Damn this art is nuts! I bought the first volume of the new collection. Excited to open it up now.

Great (and disgusting, to be frank) page. His art reminds me of Frank Terran. Nemesis is being re-released right now and it will be my occasion to discover it.

What a romantic proposal!  Quite a "meet cute."  Incredible art and outstanding use of the black to create the creepy, scary vibe. Am I correct in seeing a black heart behind the embracing figures in the last panel?  Another interesting series introduced to me by you. Thank you, Marc.

It IS a black heart! I can't recommend the entire series because there are some stretches that read as repetitive because of the serialized format but there are some good storylines throughout -- especially the O'Neill, Bryan Talbot, and Hicklenton runs.

Amazing! This is one of the pages the guy who was on the Antiques Roadshow Salsbury episode had. I tried to buy them from him but he only wanted to let them all go as one lot.

John Hicklenton had actually given his dad the pages as a thank you gift, thats how he ended up with them all.

Thanks for the back story, Oisin. I've enjoyed looking at the Hicklenton pages in your collection. Great stuff.

Hicklenton's Nemesis is second only to O'Neill's. Amazing page.

Didn't expect to see a 2000 AD page pop up in your collection. And an absolutely perfect one to boot!

Besides Bolland, McMahon, O'Neill, Gibbons, and Bisley, the number of (relatively) affordable exceptional artists that this periodical has produced in its first 15 years of its existence is unmatched. Warning: it can become an addiction unto itself.

Absolutely right. I've eyed some Talbot and additional Hicklenton pages since I bought this one. Don't know if I'll get any but 2000 AD is a rich source of material.

This is really something. I was only an occasional reader of 2000AD back in the late 80s but when John Hicklenton had work published in it then it was a must-buy, but it was not an easy thing to look at. Kevin O'Neill famously had his entire body of work "cancelled" by the Comics Code because they objected to the very style in which he drew and they said they would never approve it. He had nothing on Hicklenton which really gives me the creeps just like your Webster Sharp pages. I would never want to own anything by Hicklenton or Sharp but I am glad you have posted them as a window onto another world.

Sorry, Mark, but I suddenly realised that I should not have used the word "cancelled" as in today's language that implies Kevin O'Neill did something immoral, when by all accounts (and even in my brief meeting with him) he was a great guy; the beef that the Comics Code had with him was only that they objected to the style in which he drew. It's a good thing that I made my original comment on CAF, and not X or Instagram or it would have been open season on me (I know how the people on there work) and I would have been "cancelled". Strange the things that can pop into your head in the middle of the night.

Totally understand, Simon. I think your meaning came across in the original post and accurately describes what the Comics Code was (implicitly) attempting to do with respect to O'Neill's art.
