Description

Original hand painted and signed artwork for a British WW1 postcard. The artist is Fred Spurgin (1882-1968).

The artwork is matted (i.e. attached to a cardboard frame). With the mount included it measures approx 15 x 10.75 inches. The artwork area is approx 11.25 x 7.25 inches. (If bought, the postcard is also included)

Interesting piece. The text for the original artwork is intended for a sweetheart/wife to her man on the front and reads "My laddie in Khaki, I'm thinking of you, With a heart that is constant and thoughts that are true." However, a slightly oedipal transformation has occurred with the published postcard, where the text now carries a message from a mother to her "darling boy" although the artwork is unchanged.
