Other than the face, i wouldn't have recognized this as Cooke art. Fun piece!

It must have been one of the heroes that Darwyn Cooke looked up to back in the day as Prince Valiant is not in the regular rotation of the heroes he usually worked on. Very inspired work of the epic adventurer!

Very interesting piece and a published cover. My first time seeing this or anything like this by Darwyn. Cool.

The fabric of Val's clothes and cape are a bit thin/light, but he is happy - a very, very beautiful drawing!

Wow--What a stunning portrait of Hal Foster's Prince Valiant by the great Darwyn Cooke. Darwyn was a great choice, as he had a lot of experience drawing other artist's creations for his book "The New Frontier." In the case of Prince Valiant, he had to look way back to the 1930s and 40s, when Prince Valiant was a staple of most newspaper's Sunday Comics. Of course there are plenty of reprint books of Foster's work to use as reference. Darwyn did his research well. Val looks just as heroic as he did in the funny papers. Darwyn captures Val's smiling good humor and positive attitude. He even replicates a lot of Hal Foster's style, his linework here is very similar to Foster's. Even the clouds in the sky are drawn in Foster's trademark style. It's a stunning tribute to a classic hero of yesterday!
