DescriptionKamandi, the Last Boy On Earth #32 Pg. 11 Chapter 3 Title Splash - NO CHANCE!Pencils by Jack Kirby Inks by D. Bruce Berry Written by Jack Kirby "Faces like this are usually seen when the smoke clears...and you realize that you've either been shot at, bombed or dealt a savage blow. Kamandi sees it from a "Victim's-Eye View", when his senses return. The Face is cruel and silent, but it Speaks for itself...NO CHANCE!" I'm a bit late to the party (what else is new) for Jack Kirby's 107th birthday celebrations that took place last week (birthdate: August 28, 1917), but thought I'd share a piece or two this week to join in on that milestone for THE KING! This Kirby example from Kamandi isn't a main character page or a battle page, but this Chapter 3 Title Splash from issue 32 gives me a sense of a "self-portrait" from Kirby, smoking cigar hanging out of RamJam's mouth, reminding me of many photos of Jack with a cigar or pipe in his mouth that are almost synonymous with our memory of him as an artist and as the incredibly important figure in the history of comics that he is. Whether it was consciously or subconsciously a self-portrait or not I can't say for sure, but that's what I like to think! Issue 32 of Kamandi was a special one because not only did you have a 23-page original story, but you had a re-printing of the Kamandi #1 story and the first appearances from it (Kamandi, Great Caesar, Ben Boxer, Doctor Canus), as well as a 4 page feature on the life of Jack Kirby that included photos of Jack as well, written by Steve Sherman. It was called "A Man with a Pencil" and I've included that in the additional images section for anyone interested to check out and read. Happy belated and long live THE KING! Awesome splash by The King! After the Demon, Kamandi was (is) my favorite Kirby DC book. I loved the characters and that universe he created. What a great close-up. Congrats on this amazing example by perhaps THE greatest comic creator of all time.

I was never as crazy about Kamandi as I was for the Fourth World tomorrow but you can't argue that Kirby went nuts with the animal creature design for the series. Terrific striking example.

Thanks Mark! I also love Kirby's DC Fourth World stuff generally speaking, especially Mister Miracle (I look at my artist edition for that quite often). Ideally eventually I'd be able to add a Fourth World example, a Sandman example, and a Demon example as well - plus an example from each of his main Marvel books (so far I have 1 Captain America page) but that's a very longterm goal considering the high cost of his art market. Happy/thankful to have the examples I have and the comics will always be there to revisit and appreciate his genius

That would be quite the first face to see after regaining consciousness. Great Kirby title splash, and from a very significant issue as you say. Happy Jack Kirby Birthday!

Chances are 'cause I hear Kamandi win
I comment issue thirty two
Chances are you think Jack’s eye of victim’s view
Just a pause, my composure sort of slips
The RamJam that your inks meet line
Chances are you think the art's your King and I
Ink in comics D Bruce likes when in thighs, hold me close, dear
Chances gone you believe the splash Jack filled with lines are in my eyes

I'm not digging the stories too much and am still stuck at issue #16, but there's no denying how wonderful the art in this series is. And honestly, given that, at least in the first year, the series focused on the "talking animal of the month" with every issue, I think owning a talking head splash of RamJam is a far better get for a collection that a talking head splash of Kamandi would be. After all, at least RamJam is a cool talking ape, whereas Kamandi is just a regular, long haired human boy. This is great, man, don't lament that it isn't of a "main character"!

Thanks Ruben. I guess I wasn't really "lamenting" the fact it isnt a main character page, more just pointing it out, so probably a poor choice of language (or just uncessary to mention) on my part. As you know sometimes I lean towards self-deprication or nit-picking when it comes to my own collection or art buying decisions, but that's my subconscious cross to bare! When it comes to Kamandi, I prefer the "animal" character designs by far so this is exactly the type of page/splash that makes sense for my collection. As a read, the series doesn't hold up as well for me as his Fourth World DC stuff or any of his Marvel stuff, but I still have a soft spot for it. This is a piece that I had on my wall framed for several years in Brooklyn, but only recently got an acceptable scan that I was happy to share around his birthday milestone timing. Unfortunately the original seller/dealer only had a lower rez scan that also had that "whitening effect" where everything is washed away as far as the actual patina of the page showing it's age and current condition etc...that's a pet peeve of mine, I like to actually know what the paper color/tone looks like.

What a splash and it works well in terms of designs in the sense that for once, Kirby didn't cover the backgrounds will all kind of busyness.

Totally get that "self portrait" aspect, with cig smoking :) A lil' Nick Fury in there, too?! Fun splash commemorating the King, man, congrats!

I hear you. Perhaps "lamenting" was also not quite the right word for me to use, as I know you're self-depracating by nature and also know you're not actually sitting there at home, quietly staring out the window an dthinking "Man, if only I could have gotten a main character splash instead!". I am SO with you on making proper RGB scans! But of course, you know I'm a huge stickler for the quality of the presentation, so no surprise there. But havign the paper color washed out by crappy scans or photographs is a big pet peeve of mine, which is why I so despise looking at art that has been scanned in grayscale. This scan is AWESOME. It's probably at least 99% true to life!

This is terrific. Just a straightforward bust, but all of Jack's compositional ability is on display, making our eyes bounce all over the page, reading all the balloons, taking in all the telling details and lush textures of the character--one of a long line of Jack's grizzled veterans. Classic page.

What a splendid creation from the mind of Jack Kirby! Love this closeup of Ramjam! You're reminded of Jack himself, I'm reminded of Nick Fury, what with the eyepatch and the cigar. But either way, Ramjam is a fabulous character. Love the skull and crossbones/batwing patch emblazoned on his watch cap. Wonderful how Jack was able to give a nonhuman character such a human look of puzzlement or perhaps confusion as he contemplates his captive. Kamandi is full of wonderful creations lilke Ramjam. It was a great example of Jack's myriad creative experiments. IMHO, He was one of comic art's greatest creators ever.

When I saw this page, I thought, great splash page by the master. My other thought was, "Burkey has No Chance"...the famous Dueling Dealers line.

I love how Kirby infused so much of himself into so many of his characters. He truly poured his heart and soul into these pages which makes images like this totally special and reflective in their own right. And it's just plain badass!
