DescriptionThis page was one of my earlier purchases, bought from Anthony Snyder's website a few years ago. Of the five annuals the L.E.G.I.O.N. title got, I think this one, from 1992, was my favourite. It was a tie-in for the "Eclipso: The Darkness Within" event, which was probably my favourite of DC's interconnected yearly events from the '90s. This page sees Vril Dox and Lady Quark (visiting Earth in the interests of acquiring and studying one of Eclipso's jewels) standing tall in the aftermath of a brawl that broke out when they tried to buy a jewel off of a thug and his henchmen.I love McKone's use of perspective in the top panel, choosing a top-down view to show the reader both how effortlessly Lady Quark just dealt with all those thugs, and also showing just how much damage the brawl did to the bar. It's much more noticeable in the original art than in the coloured final product, but the detail and fine linework is just gorgeous here. The shading on the lights in the first panel, every minute piece of debris (note the billiard balls on the floor), and the crosshatching of the mesh back of Quark's top are my personal favourite touches. On the topic of her outfit, I've always been a sucker for comics (and now comic art) where characters who normally wear uniforms end up "dressing down" and wearing other clothes for awhile. Here, Vril and Quark were trying to blend in with the New York City populace, with Vril wearing a suit, coat and hat (which somehow worked to hide the fact that he was green), and Quark wearing more casual clothing and a wig to hide her cropped white hair. The title page for this annual lists no fewer than five inkers: John Dell, Jack Torrance, Peter Gross, Bob Smith, and Jimmy Palmiotti. Unfortunately, that means I have no idea who inked this page! If anyone has any idea, please do leave a comment or message me to let me know. Social/Sharing |

Thank you, Lee! :)
Tracking down L.E.G.I.O.N. artwork can be difficult sometimes, so it's always rewarding to be able to add more to my collection!

Mike McKone's top panel hs a real Darrow feel to it with so much detail but in a clean and concise manner without having to do much crosshatching.

Nice McKone page! Love his soft touch.
Thank you! "Soft touch" is a perfect descriptor for his style here. :)
