Description

So here's something that I picked up on ebay as a Rick Hoberg unpublished page.

The sellers description was," and the Doctor of darkness charge into battle on this page. Hoberg worked on the All-Star Squadron title in the early 1980s; however, this page is of unknown usage and may be unpublished. Created in ink and Zipatone over graphite on three separate tiers of Bristol board affixed to a larger sheet with a combined image area of 10" x 14.5". The page is numbered #19 in the lower right marginal corner. In Excellent condition.�

Rick did our Christmas Card Commission last year so I reached out to Rick to see if I could find out the history of this page.

Rick was kind enough to send me this answer.

Well, the history of this page is that it was a tryout page. It was penciled by Rich Buckler, and was just one of those pages that was either rejected for better storytelling, or because that story point was cut out of the ongoing saga. Roy Thomas always kept a few of these for try-outs, and he sent me this one. It led to me getting my first All Star assignment: Three issues of fill-ins penciled by Adrian Gonzales. Issues 16, 17, and 18, I believe.

Anyway, you bought yourself a nice Bucker/Hoberg page. It�s one of a kind, buddy.

Nice inks! Rich&Rick would have made a nice team.

Mike, is it on official DC art board? If yes, then I'm very curious to see an uncropped scan.

Pretty fun piece as they did mimic a golden age look for the layouts and the figurework before it got more complicated. So many word balloons is a big giveaway they were working it like it was the 1950's.
