Description

Original anime cel from Harlock Tv series from 1979 representing the death of a Mazonian woman, who turns into ashes by burning like paper

The Mazone are an ancient alien race in the animated series "Captain Harlock" (original title: "Uchū Kaizoku Kyaputen Hārokku"), created by Leiji Matsumoto. They are the main antagonists of the series and represent a civilization made up entirely of women. These beings come from a destroyed planet that orbited the star Betelgeuse, and they are searching for a new home, targeting Earth.

The Mazone have a humanoid appearance, but some of them, when they die or are severely wounded, return to their original form, which is plant-like. This detail is central to their connection with nature and the plant life cycle, as their name derives from "Amazons" and "Mazon," referring to the goddess Mazon, linked to vegetation.

In the series, many Mazone are killed in battles with Captain Harlock and his crew. When they die, they disintegrate, burning in bluish flames or reverting to their plant form, which can turn to ash. This disintegration symbolizes their non-human essence and the fact that their life cycle is tied to nature in a different way from Earth's.

Another key figure is their leader, Raflesia, who leads the war against humanity, intending to find a new home for her people. However, the conflict leads many Mazone to defeat and death, with Harlock ultimately repelling their invasion, though with a certain sadness for the fate of a people who were merely seeking refuge.

Captain Harlock (宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック?, Uchū kaizoku kyaputen Hārokku) is a science fiction manga written and illustrated by Leiji Matsumoto, published in Japan from 1977 to 1979 by Akita Shoten. An anime television series directed by Rintarō and produced by Toei Animation was made from the work, and was broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi from 1978 to 1979.

This first series was followed by others, as well as a series of feature films, most recently 2013's Captain Harlock.[1] The character also appears as a supporting character in other series such as Galaxy Express 999.
