DescriptionLee Moder was the main penciller for a good forty issues of the Reboot Legion's "Legion of Super-Heroes" title (while Jeff Moy was the primary penciller for the "Legionnaires" title). With Moder having sadly passed away last year, his estate began putting large quantities of his published art up for sale. While Moder's art never quite resonated with me the same way that Jeff's did, he was still responsible for bringing a solid half of the Reboot Legion stories I love to life, and I'm very glad to have a few pieces of his work in my collection. His estate also included a note in the package with this page, stating that "...it is both gratifying and comforting to know that these pieces of our brother's life, these manifestations of his skill and creativity, are finding new homes with people like yourself. People who will appreciate and care for them and, someday, pass them on to others to be cared for and appreciated." I think that's a beautiful summary of why this hobby is so special and important to so many of us, and also a good reminder of exactly why we should value the art in our collections.I do believe that even with the sad circumstances that brought this page into my collection, it's still important to honour Moder's talent and touch on all the things that make it a page worth celebrating! In terms of published pages, this is only the second-ever time Moder drew Brainy, who I'm pretty certain became one of his favourite Legionnaires over time (probably helped along by how Brainy appeared a lot more in Moder's books than in Jeff's). You can see that even here, so early on, Moder really had a feel for Brainy's smug, superior attitude, which would only develop as the series progressed. The page also features the beginnings of Brainy's scientific rivalry with Invisible Kid, with the two of them often butting heads or feeling one-upped by each other. It also serves as the introduction to the creation of the Legion flight ring, with Brainy having created a metal with anti-gravity properties, and Invisible Kid seeing that it has far more potential than just a bit of waste metal. From an artistic standpoint, I love how well Moder renders the various expressions on the page - you could get a really good sense of what kind of discussion they're having even without the word balloons - and of course you have to love the Kirby Krackle going on in the second panel! They really have. And it was very moving to hear their perspective on what purchasing the art meant to them.

Very nice lab page! For a futuristic title, they do value the science in the science fiction part of the storytelling. It is definitely better to have Moder's art out in the market as it will increase appreciation for his run and will most likely also result in higher prices in the future.
