A masterful piece of story telling on this page.

The action takes place on the night of Valentine's Day and the half-splash panel that opens the page is the visual answer to Batman's question to Commissioner Gordon on the preceding page, "Where, where is Pratt?"

Sgt. Frank Pratt is the fifth victim of the Hangman Killer. Tim makes Sgt. Pratt's body stand out visually by bathing the half of the rooftop water tower in front of which he hangs in deep shadow.

Tim uses one of the finger's on Sgt. Pratt's right to subtly point the reader to the picture of Gilda Dent that is pinned to his leg. We can tell that the Hangman's next clue is scrawled across Gilda's face in red, but the writing is not yet readable.

The angle of the body and the water tower direct the reader's eye down to the second panel that is the start of a three panel sequence in which Batman, Gordon, Gustavson and O'Connor, two new faces from the police force, engage in a staple of Jeph and Tim's Batman stories, a roof top conversation.

That conversation, in turn, leads the reader to the fourth panel which features a close up of the picture of Gilda Dent. The reader can now both read the clue, "Guilty As Sin," and can see that the picture of Gilda is the one that Batman found on Harvey/Two Face's desk in the office he set up down in the sewers of Gotham.

Just fantastic on all fronts! The art and the deal are both superb. Tim Sale's work continues to be a major influence in the Matt Reeves Battinson Universe with its suspenseful dark noir mystery tale.
