Description

MYSTIQUE and NIGHTCRAWLER, hinted parent and child reveal.

Another magnificent page of Bennett and Moncuse art from Lobdell’s storyline - THEORIES OF RELATIVITY, which ultimately reveals the familial connections between Mystique (Raven Darkholme), Graydon Creed, Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), Rogue (Anna Marie) and Destiny (Irene Adler).

After Nightcrawler saves Mystique, she nearly reveals the family connections between her, Graydon and Nightcrawler. It’s a great callback to the Sabretooth series, when Graydon hired his dad to kill his mother.

The top half splash is perfectly done, as the scene takes place in a graveyard, and we see the Madonna holding her baby Jesus. Mother and child, one sacrifices itself for the other, and in this books the roles are a bit reversed. But this foreshadowing teaser is a wonderful touch to the art coming up. Mystique is by no means a great parent and throughout this books he makes that painfully clear but ultimately sacrifices herself to save her son (in his youth as a baby, she throws Kurt off a waterfall, and in the end she falls from similar great heights to her apparent death).

The X-books have such a fun soap-opera family, and this particular book is filled to the brim with it, a perfect page to post as we enter the Thanksgiving season.

One of the more interesting family histories/dynamics in X-Men.  Nice page.

A great tease!  Made for great comic store theories, speculation, and conjecture just like the Sabertooth and Wolverine connection.  Besides that this is some killer 90's art.  Buried in this double sized issue that most saw as a quarterly 5th week cash grab, some of these stories definitley carried more weight than others.

I think Bennett got on my radar when he first broke in at Continuity as one of Neal's art clones.  Which is to say he was doing the Continuity house style, which was basically drawing everything like Neal Adams.  I'm pretty sure I ended up with a panel page from one of his freelance X-men jobs, but I couldn't tell you which one because I didn't have it for very long as I had decided pretty early on to only collect covers and splashes.  I think I might still have a photocopy of it buried somewhere.  I didn't follow him very closely after his Marvel work, but I was aware that he eventually ended up at Wildstorm.  Not sure what he's up to these days, but I did enjoy a lot of that X-men work.  Mosty because he was doing his own thing by then and not just aping Neal.  I remember this issue of Unlimited.  He did a fine job on it and this is a really nice example.

He is a storyboard artist, last few projects were:  BORDERLANDS, GODZILLA X KONG, FLASH, THE MANDALORIAN, BLACK ADAM.  He has a few coming up like FANTASTIC FOUR, SNOW WHITE and MIND CRAFT MOVIE.  I've worked on a few projects for VFX where he was in the art dept, but we've not had the chance to cross paths.  Hoping one day I will get the opportunity.

Bennett hyper detailed art was a big deal to me during my teenage years after discovering him on Cyberrad. Nice page from one of his most remembered books.

This explains the blue skin but the three toes? Mangog? Guess the "Did I ever tell you I'm the God of Hammers?" still works for him.

"Filled to the brimstone with it" :)  Sorry, goofy play on the end of your writeup! I know what you mean, though...soapy drama runs high with the X folk!  Congrats!
