DescriptionThe Mummy - Arturo Del Castillo, Manuel Angel Repetto Published in color in L'Eternauta 135 July 1993. Screenplay by Luis Arioli (Writer). This may be the last panel in the career of the great master draftsman Arturo Del Castillo or at any rate one of the last, symbolically very representative since he is drawing the scene of the Queen's funeral. Del Castillo was already ill and in distress unable to complete the entire story of The Mummy on his own, but he here affixes his signature on his partially unfinished work, where he depicts the god Toth next to the mummified body of the queen being led to her final walk to the mausoleum. Now ill, Del Castillo gradually gets replaced by Manuel Angel Repetto who finishes some of his plates as in this case the central strip that is replaced and overlaid by Repetto who tries to maintain a style akin to that of the master, although he modifies some details such as the god Toth hinted at in pencil and replaced by Repetto with the god Anubis. Toth: The Egyptian bird-headed god is Thot (or Djehuty), depicted with the head of an ibis or sometimes a baboon, both sacred animals associated with his figure. Thot is the god of wisdom, writing, science and magic, and scribe of the gods. He was revered as the inventor of hieroglyphics and the keeper of divine knowledge. In Egyptian mythology, Thot plays a crucial role in the judgment of souls in the afterlife. During the “Weighing of the Heart,” he is the one who records the result of the comparison between the heart of the deceased and the feather of Maat. In addition, Thot is often described as the mediator and resolver of conflicts among the gods, being deeply connected to the cosmic order. Anubis: Anubis (or Anubis, in Greek; the Egyptian name is Inpu) is one of the best-known gods of ancient Egypt, depicted with a human body and the head of a black jackal. He is the god of the dead, of mummification and the guardian of necropolises. He was revered as the protector of souls on their journey to the afterlife. Anubis accompanied the deceased into the Duat (the underworld) and participated in the ritual of the Weighing of the Heart, where the heart of the deceased was compared with the feather of Maat to determine its purity. The connection with the jackal probably stems from the fact that these animals were often seen prowling near graves, symbolically associating them with protection against defilers. Arturo Del Castillo (Concepción, March 21 , 1925 - Buenos Aires, 1992) was a Chilean cartoonist considered one of the best South American cartoonists for his accurate and detailed style.
