Description

I really love this art, having owned it for over 20 years. It has a nice combination of nostalgia, plus Jack Kirby's 70's art style, which I really liked as a kid. Having said that, I'm now going to make fun of it :)

First of all, the design is very weird. What the heck are they standing on? Is that supposed to be a tiny planet or are they rock climbing or maybe they're visiting the lava fields in Hawaii? To be fair, I'm pretty sure Kirby didn't do the layout -- let me know if you know who did, or even better, if you have a scan.

The character choices are also really weird with Moondragon and Beast, but no Captain America. Somehow Hank Pym appears on the cover twice -- maybe that's why the Wasp looks so pissed off.

Speaking of which, some of the facial expressions are pretty odd too. Frank Giacoia actually did a really great inking job. Just check out the original pencils, which were published in the Jack Kirby Collector #29. TwoMorrows had Klaus Janson re-ink it for their cover and as much as I love Janson's work, the original Giacoia version looks so much nicer.

In 2022, Marvel re-used this as the cover art to Avengers #50 (#750) Kirby Hidden Gem 1:100 Ratio Variant Cover.

A fantastic piece, Ted. Let me first sday how much I appreciate someone who, like myself, has no problem making fun of the art they own when it is deserved! I agree, Giacoia did an exemplary job on inks and in some part, actually "saved" Kirby. Kirby's Iron Man, for instance, is pretty bad top to bottom. But the finished version is excellent. No sense in pointing out all the areas, you get the point. Overall it is an excellent piece and the only shocking thing is how long it took you before you posted it!

Ha yeah - Iron Man, Hulk and Beast are particularly wonky in the pencil version, with Vision looking a lot like Mr. Miracle.

A stunner, Ted!  The gang's all here and getting the King Kirby treatment!  Particulary like his Vision here.  I meant the character but I guess I could also think of it as I like his vision of this cover generally!  Either way, lol.  Big congrats!

Thanks -- definitely have to give Giacoia credit here as the Kirby original pencil version looks very different.

Beautiful Alex Ross piece!  I'm not sure if he was inspired by this art or not, but I do know he also loves 70s Kirby.

Cool cover.  The Avengers lineup in 1975 included Beast and Moondragon.  I think Cap was off in his own title teaming up with the Falcon.  No idea about the Pyms (or the Hulk).

Good point.  It's a little weird because the treasury contains 60s reprints, but I guess they wanted the current team represented somewhere.

They are all at their most handsome best for this class photo!  It's such a fun time where Marvel could relax and let their characters look like they were meant to appeal to a wider audience with their bright colors.

At last, someone who is further behind in his posting than I am!  Haha! Though I've only been collecting art for 13 years ... BUT the minute I hit 20, I'll immediately be 20 years behind with some stuff.  This is a brilliant piece.  And like Ruben, I think it's great to be able to poke fun even at masterpieces.  I think it's funny how everyone is standing still except for Giant Man who is making these long strides that will soon result in him bowling over poor Moondragon.  Kirby pencils are so classic, but Giacoia's inks really add a lot here ... especially with the beautiful faces of Moondragon and Scarlet Witch.  Fantastic add!

Spectacular!  How large is the artwork?  Super memorable - a GEM in a Museum worthy collection of Art!

This is on 70s Marvel cover stock, which is only slightly larger than modern art board -- somewhere around 11 1/4" x 17 1/3", but the art goes all the way to the edges on either side.

Much to say about the choice of characters on this back cover! Both the Beast and Moondragon had only joined recently, while Giant Man and the Hulk had long departed (or mutated) when the stories in that book took place... I guess that's why the editor felt compelled to add a text panel stating that "The order changeth time and again... but the Avengers keep marching on" or, in other words "do not panic, but some of the characters depicted here do not appear in this book"! And, by the way, the front cover doesn't really help! Yes, it's also a great Kirby piece and the Avengers lineup is almost correct, except for Goliath, who is, again, the Hank Pym version. But, then, you may argue that, if Kirby had put the Clint Barton version, it would have conflicted with Hawkeye, who is also on the cover (alongside Captain America, by the way...). But, all this trivia, somewhat quirky, doesn't distract from the fact that this is a great Kirby cover!!! So, thanks for sharing!

What they are standing on is a variation of one point perspective. The lines lead backwards  to what would be one point in the distance. It would look better without the Giant Man figure on the back right, though that had to be added because  otherwise the horizon line ends in a bad spot  above the shoulders of the other Hank Pym. More crazy Kirby perspective at work. His stuff is great though.

Pure joy! Whatever the design choices, it was a blessing to have Kirby back on Avengers, even if it was only a few covers like this!

This is a knockout piece, even if the characters are standing on the moon!  I detect a bit of Romita touches on the inks as well.

I have always wondered what happened to this piece of amazing Kirby art. Nice to finally see it here on CAF.  I was the owner of this art many years ago and had to sell it to pay some bills. ☹️

it is very nice to see that it has a good home. Thank you for sharing. It is great to see it again!!!

Thanks Jack. I got this from Albert Moy in early 2004. I'm assuming Kirby had already signed the art before you owned it. I'm sad I never got to meet him in person.

Yes, this was signed when I got it...... I owned this back in 1994 or so..... sold it around 1999-2000 on ebay for $3,000.00..... I had a hard time getting that price believe it or not. It is cool to see it is in a nice home among a really nice collection. Congrats.

Thanks.  I'm just sorry I missed this when you were selling it. I bought a lot of great art from eBay in the late 90s to early 2000s and then prices shot up shortly afterwards. I paid multiple times that just a few short years later.

That front row + the Vision is as good as it gets.  Agree that Frank did a great job inking this piece.  Not a fan of the Beast here nor the Giant Man.  But that's just me nitpicking.  Great piece, thanks for sharing.
