Description

My 2024 collecting year will now officially be known as the year of Beachcomber. Who knew I would love this often marginalized pacifist of a character as much as I do? After seeing him revealed here at the end if issue 9 I had thoughts of “wait, who is this again?!” as I couldn’t immediately recall what I knew about the character. A core memory was quickly unlocked after doing some digging. That memory being me watching the original G1 cartoon episode “The Golden Lagoon.” In it, the Autobots & Decepticons fight over a golden substance that coats their bodies and grants them invulnerability. The substance is found in this pristine idealistic nature setting where wildlife flourishes. In the fight where the Autobots are victorious they celebrate their victory while the camera pans to a heartbroken Beachcomber, sitting on a log while the forest burns, destroyed in all of the fighting, animals displaced and likely dead and he says two sad words…”We won.”

I remember feeling sadness while seeing this episode but being a kid…it quickly was forgotten about until this fellla made his grand entrance in the Skybound series!

One thing I really love about this page is that, Beachcomber represents something not found frequently in this DWJ written series…happiness. Beachcomber and Spike have developed a wonderful bond. In this moment though, as originally drawn, Beachcomber has a characteristic smile on his face while rescuing Spike. During a YouTube commentary video discussing this issue, DWJ mentioned that he felt it was a little too telling to have him seen so happy in his big reveal so he asked Jorge to tone it down a bit since this is their first meeting. So the smile was digitally changed. Here though we see the true characteristics and nature of Beachcomber.

Another joy of OA collecting, we get to see that drawing as originally intended and one that represents the happiness that Beachcomber introduces into Spike’s world. One that has been filled with sadness and loss & loneliness.

Yeah, I could go on about how much I love this budding friendship in the series, but no one wants to read an ever longer novel. Point being, I love this page, I love the emotional impact of so many of these moments in this series and I absolutely love and admire Jorge’s ability to convey those emotions so damn well…on robot faces. Robot emotions. Love it!

I feel ya re: robot emotions. As a huge Star Wars fan I think some of the most emotionally impactful images/dialogues/scenes can come from droids and non organic lifeforms hah. Great page and love that it has so much significance to your childhood memory of the character as well as the reintroduction in the current canon

Thanks Kavi! Robots, droids, androids and Iron Giants sure do make those emotions all the more real!

I prefer the smile.  Any crash landing you can walk away from is a happy landing.

Me too, love that the true nature of the character is on full display right when Spike meets him here!

Corona's art is so good! But honestly, I get as much joy from listening to and reading you express your feelings about what the art and series in general mean to you. I live that love, vicariously through you!

Thanks Rubén! I never expected to be as invested in this story and art as I am. It's just such a wonderful study of individuals impacted by war. All of those character studies are quite nuanced too.

It's straight out of a movie, with a grand finale crash and great hero shot at the end. Superb page.

Even has some dialogue that immediately brings Star Wars to mind "My name is Beachcomber and I'm here to rescue you." Oh and yes, Beachcomber is a little short for a Transformer!
