Description

Here's a hand-drawn penciled commission from legendary animator John Pomeroy, featuring two video game characters from the Dragon's Lair franchise that he helped bring to life through his work for Don Bluth's animation studio! The Princess Daphne flees for her life from the terrible wizard Mordroc, who has transformed into his terrifying "Black Dragon" form. In early drafts and storyboards for a proposed 1980s Dragon's Lair feature film, Mordroc was going to transform into a magical dragon for the final battle, but since the film never came to fruition, the idea was shelved until it was finally realized in the final stage of Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair, a 2002 console and PC polygonal action game. I wanted to see John's take of working Princess Daphne into the scenario, even though she was held prisoner off-screen during the game's boss battle. To no surprise, he exceeded my wildest expectations, from the perfect layout that works the full figure of both characters into the frame to the fine details on Mordroc's scaly skin and Daphne's iconic sheer! Daphne is the first-lady of video games' "Save the Princess" damsels and it's a delight to see John's talents making her look just as good as ever!

Just for fun, I've added an additional image of my own digital colors layered upon a lower-resolution scan. The color scheme for the Black Dragon is hard to figure out based on available reference material, so I tried to strike a balance at something roughly accurate that also makes Mordroc's various appendages readable to the eye.
