Description

I love how T.E. Powers was able to pack so many characters and action into one political cartoon. This cartoon, titled "The National Vaudeville Show" was printed on December 20, 1903, featuring Powers' representation of the Trusts (the companies that formed monopolies) dropping trust-buster Theodore Roosevelt on top of Thomas Platt, the "political godfather" of New York. The cartoon features some of the Elon Musks of their day:

Mark Hanna (137-1904) - businessman and US Senator from Ohio
John P. Morgan (1837-1913) - American financier and investment banker
Charles W. Fairbanks (1852-1918) US Senator from Indiana and TR's VP
Edward Harriman (1848-1909) - American financier and railroad exec
Benjamin Odell (1854-1926) - NY Governor, congressman and businessman
Chauncey Depew (1834-1928) - two-term US Senator from New York
John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) - One of the richest men of all time
Thomas Platt (1833-1910) - Congressman and US Senator
President Theodore Roosevelt

The cartoon is subtitled: "THE LEAP FOR LIFE", and "Daring Aerialistic Exhibition by the World-Renowned Acrobats, the Trust Family. Accidents cannot stop this show."

I do get a kick out of Rockefeller being presented as a king. The cartoonists of the time had a grand old time portraying him.

These themes are timeless. But I guess today you'd have to add a guy in a hoodie and mask to show the displeasure of the masses.
