Powers, T.E.
Thomas E. Powers (1870-1937) was a longtime editorial/political cartoonist for the Hearst newspapers and a favorite of the fabled Hearst editor, Arthur Brisbane. When Brisbane joined Hearst in 1896, he brought Powers into the fold. The Milwaukee-born Powers had a seemingly simple approach to drawing, but he had an eye for caricature that made him a favorite of a number of presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge. Powers' Joy and Gloom characters helped to make him a hit with the public and were featured in at least one reprint book. Powers was also known for his John Q. Taxpayer character, stripped do to a barrel.
