I really, really didn't need yet another T.E. Powers cartoon, but when this one became available, I knew I had to go for it. This cartoon, from Powers' "Writing Room of the Down and Out Club", ran on November 9, 1918, just eight days after another cartoon of his from the same series, elsewhere in this gallery. The cast of characters remains largely the same: Alfred von Tirpitz, Paul von Hindenburg, Erich Ludendorff, Kaiser Wilhelm, William Jennings Bryan, and Theodore Roosevelt, off-camera, stage-right. The peace treaty would be signed just two days later, and you can see signs of treaty scattered throughout this piece.

The format of this cartoon is quite similar to the other one from the same series, complete with "Kaiser's Six Veteran Sons". It has a vaudevillian feel to the composition.

There is a note on the back of the piece to return the artwork to Katharine Dayton, who was an author, playwright and newspaperwoman. I'm not sure what she had to do with Hearst at the time, though her father, James Dayton, published the New York Evening Journal from 1913 to 1928, and was later Hearst's general advertising counselor.

I've mentioned previously that I hated Powers' work when I first start collecting strips decades ago, but over time, the charm of his work really grew on me. And he was one of Hearst's favorites, so who am I to argue?
