Description

In early August, Memphis Police Officer Demetrice Johnson, nephew of inker/artist Le Beau Underwood, was tragically killed in the line of duty just five months after graduating from the academy. Le Beau shared a GoFundMe link on social media to support Johnson's family. Having inked Star Wars comics, Le Beau was followed by Jeff Wedding, who forwarded the link to Dynamite Comics Publisher Nick Barrucci, who quickly stepped in to help.

The Alex Ross pencil drawing (accompanying image) was originally created to preview the cover art for Dynamite's 2012 The Shadow series. After I won Nick's auction for the piece, I discovered that both Demetrice and Le Beau were from my hometown of Chicago, where Le Beau still resides. I reached out to Le Beau, who agreed to ink and color an 11 x17 blue line of Alex's art – which turned out fantastic.

A tragic loss, RIP Officer Johnson. Nick is one of those that truly keeps the giving hearts of our hobby beating and pointing in the right direction.
