Description

I'm a big fan of Sheldon Mayer's work as editor, writer, and artist. Sheldon was the person who pulled Superman from the reject pile and put him into Action #1. He was DC's earliest and best editor involved in the creation of the JSA and most of its members. Additionally, he wrote and drew the wonderful Scribbly strip - a semi-autobiographical strip about a young cartoonist.

He's probably best known for Sugar and Spike; though, I have to admit that Scribbly is my favorite. The main S&S series went to 98 (in the US). In 1992, DC issued #99 (DC Silver Age Classics Sugar and Spike 99), but there has never been a 100th issue.

To fill the time as we wait for DC to create and publish S&S 100 and to honor Sheldon Mayer's most famous characters, I've commissioned a few 100th issue covers. I try to find artists with an all-ages feel and have them create the cover. Sometimes I participate a lot (for example, Fred Hembeck's where I had a very specific idea that he nailed) and sometimes very little (Katie Cook where I just asked for her Gronk characters with S&S).

I've loved Farel's work from the time I saw the first commission from him. Later, I discovered that he has a number of books available in the market, e.g., Pop Gun Wars, The Wrenchies, and Proxima Centauri. They are set in a common universe.

One day back in July of 2022, I noticed Farel had a Crowdfundr sketchbook project (20 20 20 20) that included a commission option. I reached out and asked if he'd like to extend the commission offer to include my S&S 100 commission theme. He agreed and we negotiated a price and he added the option to the Crowdfundr.

Over the next 13 months, we worked on it in bursts between other projects and posted his progress on his Patreon. That work was summarized in a YouTube video retrospective that I found quite interesting.

I love everything about this piece. The colors are beautiful, the perspective is dramatic, the buildings are eye catching, the kids look great, and Bernie's climbing machine is awesome! He squeezed in Sinclair from Pop Gun War and the airship is one of his, too.

In addition to the video link above, the Additional Images section had a number of preliminary / WIP pictures. Yes, he did send me the original sketch from his moleskin sketchbook. That's both cool and generous.

How wonderful! I'm so glad you got a commission from Farel. And he really knocked it out of the park! Thanks for mentioning the small image of Sinclair, as I would not have noticed him fluttering about!

Alex, this is proof that you're wife is better than ANYBODY ELSE'S wife!! What a great and intricately detailed piece. Love the giant machine and the way Sugar N Spike are depicted by Farel. It could almost be called Steampunk Sugar N Spike.

Done in a manner of a children's book! Maybe the look and route Sugar and Spike should be done to appeal to a wider audience of today.
