DescriptionWhen this popped up for sale on CAF, I was immediately soldI have seen a few pages from this issue in person and they have that classic 1970s Marvel Magic in spades - Surfer, Hulk and of course, Sub-Mariner. I often forget these pages are from Sub-Mariner as I think of the book as the Defenders Prototype (Overstreet says 'Prelude') more than anything else. In any case, this has all three in action with some fun dialogue to boot! For example, how are our three heroes 'Gringos'? Social/Sharing |

Hulk and Subby have teamed up against the Avengers early on, but Surfer is a wildcard in this trio. It was always risky having these volatile personalities team up, but the mighty Marvel method made it the team's strength! All three powerhouses by Sal and Jim Mooney who defined a lot of the early 70's look of Marvel.

A grail for any Defenders fan, this two-parter predates their first official appearance in Marvel Feature #1 by eleven months. Probably my favorite story from the books entire run. Having Surfer in the story was an extra special treat as I understand there was an unofficial edict at Marvel that only Stan was allowed to write any story featuring the character. This held until Englehart was granted permission to bring him back to the fold in issue #6 of the original title. Congratulations on a truly spectacular page.

Stunning art - Sal and Jim work SO well together, and rarely have Hulk and Sunny looked better - add to that the action, and a really cool Silver Surfer soaring panel, and this is a perfect page of Marvel Bronze Age beauty!
The hilariously unPC dialogue is pure gold...I mean, Gringos? A Green Goliath, an Atlantean Prince and a silver-skinned herald of Galactus? Ok bro...😂😂😂

Five panel Marvel '70s action goodness! Thin vertical panels accentuate the action. Love the dialogue -- sniveling perros!

Glad you are enjoying it, Mark, and this page is the FIRST time the Hulk, Subby and Surfer joined forces to fight together (rather than each other)- the true beginning of the Defenders! For me, that third panel with the Hulk squinting upwards just made this page perfect!

That's a classic and historical "first appearance" of the three Defenders. Awesome. The surfing panel is delicious!
