Description

'Curley Harper at Lakespur' (later reduced to simply 'Curley Harper' in 1937) was a topper/companion feature to 'Tim Tyler's Luck' which began at the end of March, 1935, replacing 'The Kid Sister' in that role. The first two years chronicled the college life of Harper, who was created in the mold of Jack Armstrong, as an All-American athlete while attending Lakespur College. The Sunday adventure here was typical of his exploits, a mixture of soap opera and mild drama, written by Lyman Young and ghosted by a very young Alden McWilliams channeling his inner Alex Raymond, right down to Raymond's trademark fabric hatching on the figure in Panel Two.

Who knew they could make speed skating so dramatic! The form and the balance look just right gliding in stride! Even the finale breaking through the ice is shown with an ice skater's power and grace in the brushwork.
