Description

I pledged to the TUKI: Fight for Fire Kickstarter campaign from Jeff Smith & Cartoon Books in May/June 2021 and selected one of the “Hand drawn & Inked ORIGINALS” as my reward. We were given a choice of either a sketch of Fone Bone, RASL, or Tuki and, being such a huge fan of the Bone saga, I obviously chose Fone Bone. I started to see sketches posted to CAF in December ‘21/January ‘22 and saw Simon M’s fantastic custom piece with Gran’ma Ben and Fone Bone as Batman. Since I hadn’t received mine yet, I asked Tom Gaadt (colorist and administrator for Cartoon Books at the time) if Jeff could do a small recreation of one of my favorite panels from the series. I definitely didn’t expect it to be done but I know that I would have regretted not asking.

Fast forward to July ‘21 and Tom finally got back to me. Remember that Jeff & Cartoon Books were in the middle of creating the More Tall Tales graphic novel, fulfilling their second Tuki Kickstarter campaign, and had just gotten back to Ohio from SDCC ‘22. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences from the Bone crew and, truth be told, I sorta forgot about it as well since I was busy preparing and sending Bone books to be signed at San Diego. Tom apologized profusely for the extended wait and generously had Jeff draw this recreation.

The piece is about 9” by 10” and drawn with blue pencils and ink. As you can see from the original panel, Jeff added a grin to the Red Dragon which was a very nice touch. The drawing above will stand alone without the surrounding story so I think that the wry smile gives a bit of context to the Dragon’s intent. It’s one of my favorite moments from the best issue in the series and I will always treasure it!

A great reward!  Smith did this in a manner that is done for publication.  The brush line is as smooth as the original and done in a Walt Kelly cartoony manner.

Wow! Doesn't get much better than this. Love the Dragon's smirk as well 😂

That's cool Jeff ended up doing a mini commission for you, in one of the few cases where delays have a positive ending.  Congrats!
