DescriptionAnother OAX pickup from Mr. Jeff Singh. A collector of great taste and distinction.American Virgin was a sharp reflection of the mid-2000s Vertigo era, tackling themes of faith, sexuality, and personal identity at a time when comics were increasingly pushing narrative boundaries. Becky Cloonan’s art was a perfect fit for the book, balancing raw emotion with a loose, expressive line that recalled the energy of Paul Pope and the crisp, manga-influenced storytelling of Chynna Clugston Major. Her work also carried traces of European comics traditions, particularly in her use of heavy shadows and gestural detail, while her character work showed a clear understanding of shōjo manga’s emotional depth. The covers were just as much of a draw, featuring some of the strongest artists of the time, including Joshua Middleton, Celia Calle, and Frank Quitely, whose distinct compositions and fine-line detail added to the book’s prestige. Though American Virgin had a relatively short run, it stood out as a visually striking and thematically ambitious series that captured the evolving sensibilities of comics in the early 2000s. In the early 2000s, Joshua Middleton emerged as one of the most distinctive artists of his generation, pioneering a clean-lined, digitally painted aesthetic at a time when few in mainstream comics were fully embracing digital techniques. His work on NYX for Marvel was a breakthrough, blending sharp, precise linework with soft, painterly coloring that gave his characters a striking, almost ethereal presence. Unlike many of his contemporaries who were still relying on traditional inking and coloring separations, Middleton seamlessly integrated his lines and colors in a way that felt fresh and modern—his figures had a weightlessness to them, with subtle gradients replacing heavy shadows and giving his art an almost cinematic quality. By the time he was creating covers for American Virgin, Middleton had refined his approach even further, crafting bold, graphic compositions that were emblematic of the mid 2000s shifting aesthetics. His work reflected the sensibilities of the era, sleek, polished, and deeply influenced by the rise of digital art in both comics and adjacent media like animation and concept design. His covers often featured striking, isolated figures, with a keen sense of fashion and character design that set them apart. Middleton’s ability to blend traditional illustration fundamentals with cutting-edge digital techniques put him ahead of his time, making his work feel both of the moment and ahead of the curve in an industry still transitioning into the digital age. Happy to add this to my collection and scratch that Middleton itch. Social/Sharing |

Middleton really excells at flowers, shrubs, and other elements of greenery (probably why his Poison Ivy covers have been so good too) with his intricate linework. this is so nice and lovely. great call and no surprise it has the Jeff Singh collection provenance to it. congrats Chuck great pickup!
