Jim Rugg just recently released a new zine that contains some of Ken Landgraf's lost stories that he did with writer John Jacobs. I grabbed a copy at a convention a couple of weeks ago and was immediately drawn to Ken's art style. It didn't take long for me to realize that Ken is currently open for commissions, not to mention that he will also be tabling at IC3 in a couple weeks! So, I immediately got to thinking about a good subject. It didn't come right away, but when it did I knew the end result was going to be a good one.

Basil Wolverton's Spacehawk is a wonderful fit for Ken's style and I think he completely nailed it. If you are unfamiliar with Spacehawk, it's a story that was way ahead of its time and I absolutely love the character design. It also has some weird looking space creatures, so you can't go wrong there.

I opted for the black and white option instead of color, and also told Ken that I love the use of zipatone. Ken did not skimp in the least and the end result is so good. He brought his own style to the character while still capturing the original design (with helmet on). The background successfully feels like another planet, and then you have the creatures! Somewhere Basil Wolverton is smiling. Sincere thanks to Ken for an awesome commission!

Landgraf is one of the pre 80's outlaw indie comic artists that Comic Kafabe and Rugg celebrate. It's great that he's still active and able to take commissions.
